Group offers need a minimum party size, so check that yours qualifies. Per person shares the order total, free outfits included. Ask whether a free outfit also covers its shoes and fees.
Still open: Quote A: damage waiver, required fees and tax; Quote B: required fees and tax. Ask each shop before you compare totals.
- One full-price rental from Quote A costs at least $189 so far. Buying pays for itself if you would rent 5 times or more, maybe fewer once the open lines are priced.
- One full-price rental from Quote B costs at least $266 so far. Buying pays for itself if you would rent 4 times or more, maybe fewer once the open lines are priced.
This compares what each quote charges for the same outfits. It doesn't include a late-return or replacement charge, which depends on the shop's terms, or tailoring on a suit you buy unless you put it in the buy price. Check the return date before you choose.

For the whole party
Tux rental cost by party size
The same two outfits as the calculator's starting quotes: jacket, pants, shirt, and shoes for everyone, with each shop's group offer only once the party qualifies. Generation Tux's free rental starts at 5 paid rentals (6 outfits) and runs through December 31, 2026; The Black Tux's $200 off starts at 5 party members. Both ship free (The Black Tux on orders over $200). Before tax, and before any Generation Tux waiver, which its pages don't state.
| Outfits | Generation Tux | The Black Tux |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (groom only) | $189($189 each) | $266($266 each) |
| 4 | $756($189 each) | $1,064($266 each) |
| 6 | $975($162.50 each) | $1,396($232.67 each) |
| 8 | $1,353($169.13 each) | $1,928($241 each) |
The Black Tux's total includes its $12 waiver per rental and its $30 shirt, which Generation Tux's price already includes. Neither price includes a tie or vest: add those in Upgrades.
The calculation method
Same outfits, then every charge.
Rental × paid outfits + (shoes + damage waiver + upgrades) × all outfits + shipping + fees and tax − group discount = full cost
- Paid outfits are everyone on the order minus any free rental from a group offer. A free outfit takes off its rental price only.
- Shoes, the waiver, and upgrades are per outfit, so they count for everyone, free outfits included.
- Open lines stay open. A blank waiver, shipping, or fee line is never counted as $0, and neither quote is called cheaper until both are complete.
- Rent or buy divides a buy price by one full-price rental (no free outfit or discount) to show how many rentals it takes to match.
What a rental quote should list
- Which pieces the price covers: shirt, tie, vest, shoes, cufflinks.
- The damage waiver, and what it does and doesn't cover.
- Shipping both ways, or the store pickup and return days.
- The group offer, who qualifies, and whether it covers shoes.
- When it arrives, when it must go back, and the late fee.
- Free size exchanges, and what a rush order costs.
What this leaves out
- Late return or replacement charges, which depend on the shop's terms.
- Tailoring on a suit you buy, unless you put it in the buy price.
- Who pays for each groomsman's rental.

Questions about tuxedo rental cost
How much does it cost to rent a tux for a wedding?
Zola puts the average wedding tux rental at $150 to $300, and WeddingWire at $100 to $199. On October 28, 2026, Generation Tux listed its Black Notch Lapel Tuxedo at $159 with a dress shirt, and The Black Tux listed its Peak Lapel Tuxedo at $189 for the jacket and pants. Shoes, a damage waiver, and tax can add to either.
What is included in a tuxedo rental?
It depends on the shop. Generation Tux's basic package includes a dress shirt with the jacket and pants. The Black Tux's price covers the jacket and pants, with the shirt at $30 and shoes at $35. Men's Wearhouse sells packages: 6 pieces from $149.99 with shoes and socks, 9 pieces from $199.99 with a vest, pocket square, and cufflinks. List the same pieces in both quotes before you compare.
Does the groom get his tux free?
Often, if enough of the party rents from the same shop. Generation Tux gives the couple one free rental with 5 paid rentals, through December 31, 2026. The Black Tux takes $200 off for the groom when 5 or more party members reserve, if their assigned outfits are valued at $200 or more. Zola says most companies offer a free groom's tux with four to six groomsmen. Enter a free rental in Free outfits and a dollar offer in Group discount.
How much do rental shoes and the damage waiver add?
Zola says shoes add $25 to $45 and damage protection $12 to $20. On the shops' own pages, shoes were $30 at Generation Tux and $35 at The Black Tux, and The Black Tux adds a $12 accidental damage waiver to each rental order.
For six people, how much does renting tuxes cost?
With the two outfits we checked, before tax: $975 at Generation Tux with one free rental (any damage waiver still to add), and $1,396 at The Black Tux with the groom's $200 off. That is $162.50 and $232.67 per person.
Is it cheaper to rent or buy a tuxedo?
For one wedding, renting is cheaper. The Black Tux sells its Peak Lapel Tuxedo for $695, its shirt for $95 and its shoes for $95, so $885 for the outfit before tailoring. Renting the same outfit costs $266 with the $12 waiver, before tax, so buying pays for itself only from the fourth wear. Enter what the whole outfit costs to buy, with tailoring, and the calculator shows the break-even for each quote.
Can I count a fee I don't know as zero?
No. A blank waiver, shipping, or fee line stays open, and the calculator doesn't call either quote cheaper until each one has an answer.
