Quick answer
Average wedding band cost: $4,500
The Knot reports $4,500 as the average cost of a live wedding band, from its Real Weddings Study of 10,474 U.S. couples married in 2025. Its lower, median and upper cost quartile figures are $900, $1,900 and $7,000. It says 12% of couples hire a live band for the reception, and the average DJ cost is $1,800.
WeddingWire says the average wedding band cost in the U.S. is around $2,050 and typically ranges from $489 to $5,720, based on spending couples reported in reviews. It does not date the sample. Zola (updated February 19, 2026) says most live wedding bands start around $2,500 for smaller acoustic groups and can reach $10,000 or more for full show bands with multiple vocalists and horn sections. None of these is a local price, so compare your own quotes on the same hours.

Hit Play says travel is complimentary under 100 miles from Randolph, Massachusetts. From 100 miles it charges $75 per band member, then $50 per member for each further 50 miles, and from 150 miles the couple provides lodging. It asks for a $500 deposit. Its page lists no tax. La Vie En Rose says travel fees are set at booking.
Extra hour by band size
What one more hour adds at $150 per musician
Hit Play lists live band overtime at $150 per musician per hour. This table multiplies that rate by each band size it lists. Other bands price overtime their own way: Zola says extensions typically cost $200 to $500 per additional hour.
| Package | 4 reception hours | One extra hour | 5 hours in all |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo acoustic / DJ combo | $2,600 | 1 × $150 = $150 | $2,750 |
| Acoustic duo | $3,700 | 2 × $150 = $300 | $4,000 |
| Acoustic trio | $4,500 | 3 × $150 = $450 | $4,950 |
| 4-piece band | $5,500 | 4 × $150 = $600 | $6,100 |
| 5-piece band | $6,200 | 5 × $150 = $750 | $6,950 |
| 6-piece band | $6,800 | 6 × $150 = $900 | $7,700 |
| 7-piece band | $7,300 | 7 × $150 = $1,050 | $8,350 |
The calculation method
Same hours, then every charge.
Package + extra hours × extra-hour rate + ceremony music + cocktail-hour music + travel + fees and tax + extras you chose = full cost
- Extra hours are the reception hours you need past the package, rounded up to a full hour.
- Ceremony and cocktail-hour music count only if you want them and the package leaves them out.
- Open lines stay open. A blank rate, price, travel fee, or tax line is never counted as $0, and neither quote is called cheaper until both are complete.
The starting numbers are the example from our band cost guide, using Hit Play's listed prices: $6,200 for its five-piece band plus $350 ceremony audio and $400 for two cocktail musicians ($6,950), against its $7,200 Wedding Special, for a venue under 100 miles from Randolph, Massachusetts, where its travel is free. If the reception runs an hour over, they become $7,700 and $8,100, before tax.
Ask every band
- Which musicians play, and the set and break schedule.
- Whether ceremony and cocktail-hour music are included.
- How overtime is billed: per hour or half hour, per musician or for the band.
- Travel and lodging for your venue address, and any sales tax.
What this leaves out
- Meals or a green room the band may ask for.
- Venue rules on load-in, power, sound limits, and end times.

Questions about wedding band cost
How much does a wedding band cost?
The Knot Real Weddings Study reports $4,500 as the average cost of a live wedding band for couples married in 2025, with a median of $1,900. WeddingWire puts it at around $2,050, typically $489 to $5,720, based on what couples reported in reviews. Zola says most live wedding bands start around $2,500 for smaller acoustic groups and can reach $10,000 or more for full show bands. One Massachusetts band, Hit Play, lists four reception hours at $6,200 for five musicians (checked October 20, 2026).
How much does a band charge for an extra hour?
It depends on the band and its size. Hit Play lists live band overtime at $150 per musician per hour, so one extra hour of its five-piece band is $750. Zola says extensions typically cost $200 to $500 per additional hour. Ask each band for its rate in writing.
Is a band package with ceremony and cocktail music better value?
Only if you need those parts. In our example, Hit Play's five-piece package plus ceremony audio and two cocktail musicians comes to $6,950 before tax for a venue under 100 miles from Randolph, Massachusetts (where its travel is free), and its six-piece Wedding Special that includes both is $7,200. The Special adds a sixth musician for $250 more.
Does guest count change what a wedding band costs?
It can. The Knot reports average band spending of $1,600 for weddings of 1 to 50 guests, $3,000 for 51 to 100, and $5,400 for 101 or more. Give each band your guest count and room so it can size the band and sound.
Can I count an unlisted travel fee or tax as zero?
Not until the band confirms it. The calculator keeps a blank travel, fees, or tax line open and does not call either quote cheaper until every open line has an answer.
Does a wedding band cost more than a DJ?
On average, yes. The Knot reports $4,500 for a live band and $1,800 for a DJ, and WeddingWire reports around $2,050 for a band and around $1,000 for a DJ. The Knot also says 12% of couples hire a live band for their reception. Compare the same hours and duties: Hit Play, for example, plays DJ music during band breaks.
How is extra time billed?
The calculator bills extra time by the full hour, so a partial hour rounds up. Bands set their own rules. Ask whether they bill by the hour or half hour, per musician or for the band, and who can approve extra time on the day.
