One hour over can't be compared yet: Quote B has no extra-hour rate.

Extra time is billed by the full hour, so a partial hour rounds up. Ask each photographer how they bill it. Per hour is for comparing quotes, not the photographer's wage. The cheaper quote is only better if the photos, delivery, and rights are what you want.

Quick answer

Average wedding photographer cost: $4,400

Zola's 2026 wedding cost guide lists photography at a $4,400 average and a typical range of $3,500 to $5,300. It is a national category average, not a local price or a standard package. Your written quotes, for your date, place, and coverage, are the numbers to compare.

The calculation method

Same coverage, then every charge.

Package + extra hours × extra-hour rate + second photographer + engagement session + album + travel + required fees and tax + other extras = full cost

  1. Extra hours are the hours of coverage you need past the package, rounded up to a full hour.
  2. A second photographer, engagement session, or album counts only if you want it and the package leaves it out.
  3. Open lines stay open. A blank rate, add-on price, travel fee, or tax line is never counted as $0, and neither quote is called cheaper until both are complete. Leave other extras blank if you chose none.

The starting numbers are the made-up example from our photographer cost guide: an eight-hour day with two photographers. Studio One quotes $3,900 for six hours, $350 for each added hour, and $500 for a second photographer, which comes to $5,100. Studio Two quotes $4,950 for eight hours with two photographers.

What a photo quote should list

  • Start and stop times, locations, and how many photographers.
  • How overtime is billed and who can approve it on the day.
  • Travel, lodging, and any required fees or sales tax.
  • Sessions and products: engagement session, album, prints.
  • The gallery, delivery window, and your download and printing rights.
  • Deposit, payment dates, and what happens if the photographer can't come.

What this leaves out

  • Photo style, editing, and how you get along. Compare portfolios too.
  • Venue rules on photography, permits, and meals for the team.

Questions about wedding photographer cost

How much does a wedding photographer cost?

Zola's 2026 wedding cost guide lists photography at a $4,400 average, with a typical range of $3,500 to $5,300. Use it as a starting point. Your quotes depend on the hours, team, travel, albums, and delivery you choose.

Is the cost per hour the photographer's hourly wage?

No. Dividing a quote by the hours of coverage gives you a number for comparing quotes. The price also pays for planning, travel, editing, and delivery.

Should I pay for a second photographer?

That is your choice. Look at your timeline: if getting ready happens in two places at once, or you want guests and portraits covered at the same time, ask each photographer to price both options in writing.

Can I count an unlisted travel fee or tax as zero?

Not until the photographer confirms it. The calculator keeps blank lines open and does not call either quote cheaper until every open line has an answer.

How is extra time billed?

The calculator bills extra time by the full hour, so a partial hour rounds up. Photographers set their own rules. Ask how they bill it and who can approve extra time on the day.

Should I choose the cheaper photographer quote?

Only after both quotes cover the same hours, team, and products, and every required charge is confirmed. Then compare the photos, the delivery and print terms, the backup plan, and how well you get along.
