What size cake for 50 to 250 guests

These rows assume every guest eats one wedding-size slice from a round cake, with each tier 2 inches smaller than the one below. Each option is the smallest cake with that many tiers that serves everyone.

Cake and cupcakes

Cupcakes needed with a small cutting cake

Many couples cut a small cake and serve cupcakes to everyone else. These rows assume every guest eats one serving: wedding-size slices from a round cutting cake, then one cupcake for each other guest. That one-cupcake rule is our own assumption. Dozens are rounded up to full dozens for bakers that sell that way.

Round cake · wedding slices · full dozens
GuestsCupcakes with a 6 in. cake (12 slices)Cupcakes with an 8 and 6 in. cake (36 slices)
5038 (4 dozen)14 (2 dozen)
8068 (6 dozen)44 (4 dozen)
10088 (8 dozen)64 (6 dozen)
125113 (10 dozen)89 (8 dozen)
144132 (11 dozen)108 (9 dozen)
150138 (12 dozen)114 (10 dozen)
200188 (16 dozen)164 (14 dozen)
250238 (20 dozen)214 (18 dozen)

Fewer guests eating dessert means fewer cupcakes. To price the plan, turn on Cake and cupcakes in the calculator and add your baker's price per serving and per cupcake. A price you leave blank stays open, and the total shows once every price it needs is in.

The calculation method

Servings first, then tiers.

Guests × share who eat cake, rounded up, + extra servings = servings you need

  1. Count each tier with Wilton's chart for your shape and slice size. Wilton calls these numbers a guide. Tiers 3 to 6 inches high give the same count, and tiers under 3 inches give about half.
  2. Leave out the top tier if you will save it, so it is not counted as servings.
  3. List the options: for one to five tiers, the smallest cake with each tier 2 inches smaller than the one below that serves enough. The best stacked fit is the stacked option with the fewest extra servings.

The 100% starting share is our own assumption, chosen so you never run short by default. Your baker's cutting plan and slice size decide the real number, so ask them to confirm the servings in writing.

What this estimate leaves out

  • Design work, flavors, fillings, and decoration charges.
  • Delivery, setup, stands, and other rentals.
  • A venue or caterer cutting fee, tax, and minimum orders.

Before you order

  • Ask your baker which slice size their serving count uses.
  • Ask whether your caterer cuts with the same plan.
  • Ask whether a kitchen cake is available and how it is priced.

Questions about wedding cake servings

How many people does a 3-tier wedding cake feed?

It depends on the tier sizes. By Wilton's chart for 4-inch-high tiers, a round cake with 10, 8 and 6 inch tiers gives 74 wedding servings, and 12, 10 and 8 inch tiers give 118. Square tiers of 10, 8 and 6 inches give 100, because a square tier holds more cake than a round one of the same width.

What size wedding cake do I need for 100 guests?

If every guest eats a wedding-size slice, you need 100 servings. A round cake with 12, 10 and 8 in. tiers serves 118, and a two-tier cake with 14 and 12 in. tiers serves 134. If you expect fewer guests to eat cake, lower the share in the calculator and the size drops.

What is the difference between a wedding slice and a party slice?

Wilton bases wedding servings on slices about 1 by 2 inches and party servings on slices about 1.5 by 2 inches, both from a tier about 4 inches high. Party slices are larger, so the same cake gives fewer of them. Ask your baker which size their serving count uses.

Do I need a slice of cake for every guest?

Not always. Our wedding cake cost guide works out servings as the guests you expect to eat cake, plus any planned leftovers. If you also serve other desserts, you might plan for fewer slices than guests. The calculator starts at 100% so you never run short by default.

How many cupcakes do I need with a cutting cake?

Take the servings you need and subtract what the cutting cake serves. For 100 guests who all eat cake, a 6 inch round cutting cake gives 12 wedding slices, so you need 88 cupcakes (8 dozen if your baker sells by the dozen). With 8 and 6 inch tiers, the cake gives 36 slices and you need 64 cupcakes (6 dozen). One cupcake for each serving is our own assumption.

Should I count the top tier?

Only if it will be served. If you plan to keep the top tier, turn on "Save the top tier" and the calculator counts only the tiers below it.

What if no tiered cake is big enough?

For large weddings, a display cake plus a kitchen cake is one option: a plainer cake cut in the kitchen and served with the display cake. Ask your baker whether it matches the display cake's flavor and how they price it.
