This compares what each artist charges for the people and services you ticked. A lower total only means a better deal when both quotes cover the same looks, the same number of people, and a finish time that works. Check who does each service and the schedule in writing.

Quick answer
Wedding hair and makeup cost: $300 on average from couples, $982 in Zola's index
The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study, a survey of 10,474 couples married in 2025, and what couples reported to WeddingWire both put the average at $300. Zola's Wedding Cost Index puts it at $982, typically $800 to $1,200. None of them says whether that covers the bride alone or the whole party.
| Source | Average | Typical spend |
|---|---|---|
| The Knot2026 Real Weddings Study | $300 | Spend range $200 low, $300 medium, $400 high; 72% of couples hired hair and makeup |
| WeddingWireCouple-reported prices | $300 | $150 to $600 for most couples |
| ZolaWedding Cost Index | $982 | $800 to $1,200 |
Prices per service
| Service | Zola range | WeddingWire average |
|---|---|---|
| Bride's hair | $150 to $600; an updo $300 to $450 | $55 blowout, $100 updo |
| Bride's makeup | $200 to $500; traditional $200 to $400 | $100 traditional, $115 airbrush |
| Trial, if charged separately | $100 to $250 hair, $150 to $300 makeup | $75 per service |
| Bridesmaid hair | $75 to $150 | $50 blowout, $75 updo |
| Bridesmaid makeup | $60 to $125 | $75 |
| Travel to you | $50 to $200, or $25 to $75 per hour of travel | Listed as an extra |
Zola says a salon visit typically costs 30% to 50% less than on-location styling, and that artists in major cities charge more. WeddingWire lists travel, trials, assistants, touch-up hours, and false lashes as possible extras. Your number comes from the artist's written quote for your group.
Party math
Bridesmaid hair and makeup by party size
Hair and makeup for each person in the party, times the number of people. The two rates come from our guide's example: WeddingWire averages ($75 updo + $75 makeup, $150 per person) and Zola midpoints ($112.50 hair + $92.50 makeup, $205 per person). These are multiplication examples, not quotes.
| People | $150 each | $205 each | $150 + 20% tip | $205 + 20% tip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | $300 | $410 | $360 | $492 |
| 3 | $450 | $615 | $540 | $738 |
| 4 | $600 | $820 | $720 | $984 |
| 5 | $750 | $1,025 | $900 | $1,230 |
| 6 | $900 | $1,230 | $1,080 | $1,476 |
| 8 | $1,200 | $1,640 | $1,440 | $1,968 |
If each bridesmaid pays for their own services, one person's share with a 20% tip is $180 at the first rate and $246 at the second. Travel, an assistant, or a minimum can change the real total, so ask.
The calculation method
Same people, then every charge.
Bridal package + bride's hair + bride's makeup + trials + touch-ups + lashes + party hair × people + party makeup × people + tip + travel + required fees and tax + other extras = full cost
- A bridal package is one price for several of the bride's services. Tick each one it covers. Enter $0 if the artist prices each on its own.
- The party is priced per person and multiplied by the people getting each service.
- The tip is a percentage of the day-of services: the package, the bride's services, touch-ups, lashes, and the party. A package price is tipped in full. Trials priced on their own, travel, and fees are not tipped here. Tick the box if a quote already includes a gratuity.
- Open lines stay open. A blank price for a service you want is never counted as $0, and neither quote is called cheaper until both are complete.
The starting numbers are the example in our hair and makeup cost guide: a bride and four bridesmaids, each getting an updo and makeup, with trials for the bride and a 20% tip. Zola's midpoints come to $1,495 of services, $400 of trials, and a $299 tip, so $2,194. WeddingWire's averages come to $800, $150, and $160, so $1,110. Travel is still unpriced in both.
What a hair and makeup quote should list
- Each person's services, and who does each one.
- Whether the trial is included, and its price per service.
- Travel to your address, and any minimum people or spend.
- An assistant, early start, touch-up hours, and lashes.
- Whether a gratuity is already in the total.
- The start time, finish time, and how many people they serve at once.
- The retainer, the payment dates, and the cancellation terms.
What this leaves out
- Hair pieces, veils, and products you buy yourself.
- Whether the artist's style suits the look you want.

Questions about wedding hair and makeup cost
How much does wedding hair and makeup cost?
The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study and WeddingWire both put the average at $300, from what couples reported. Zola's Wedding Cost Index puts it at $982, typically $800 to $1,200. None of the three says whether its average covers the bride alone or the whole party, so price your own group with two artists.
How much does hair and makeup cost for bridesmaids?
WeddingWire's averages are $75 for an updo and $75 for makeup, $150 per bridesmaid. Zola's ranges are $75 to $150 for hair and $60 to $125 for makeup. At those two rates, four bridesmaids come to $600 or $820 before a tip, or $720 or $984 with a 20% tip.
Are trials included in the price?
Often not. When a trial is charged separately, WeddingWire's average is $75 per service and Zola's ranges are $100 to $250 for hair and $150 to $300 for makeup. Ask whether the bridal package includes the trial, and count it once.
How much should I tip a wedding hair and makeup artist?
WeddingWire suggests 15% to 20% of the total for each professional. Check whether the quote already includes a gratuity before you add one. The calculator tips the day-of services only, not trials, travel, or fees.
Can I count an unlisted travel fee as zero?
Not until the artist confirms there is none. Zola puts on-location travel fees at $50 to $200, or $25 to $75 per hour of travel time. The calculator keeps a blank line open and does not call either quote cheaper until each line has an answer.
