Count the final fitting. Ask each shop how many its price covers.

Starts with an example dress that needs a lace hem, a bustle, and the sides taken in, over three fittings. Quote A uses the low end of each AT Romance price range, with its two included fitting consultations counted as fittings, and Quote B uses Alterations by Maheen's price list, so they are published menu prices, not real quotes. Neither prices a third fitting or lists tax. Enter your own.

Still open: Quote A: extra fittings, required fees and tax; Quote B: fittings covered, required fees and tax. Ask each shop in writing before you compare totals.

This compares what each shop charges for the jobs you ticked. A lower total only means a better deal when both quotes cover the same work on the same dress, and the dress will be ready in time. A shop may change its price after it sees the dress on you, so get the final scope in writing.

Quick answer

Wedding dress alterations cost: $300 to $800 in Zola's article, $700 to $1,000 in The Knot's

Neither figure comes from a survey. Zola gives a range for standard changes. The Knot quotes an alterations expert on a typical job: a hem, a bustle, and some adjustment to the top or bottom of the gown. Lace, beading, layers, and structural work cost more.

The two shop menus in our alterations cost guide show the same pattern line by line. AT Romance, a bridal shop that only alters gowns bought there, lists a hem from $150, a bustle from $75, and bodice work from $100. Alterations by Maheen lists a single-layer hem at $250 and a layered or lace hem at $450.

What a rush fee adds to the example

The calculator's example dress needs a lace hem, a bustle, and the sides taken in. Here is what a 25% or 50% rush charge would add to each quote's known work. A flat fee like AT Romance's $100 is simpler: add it once.

Rush surcharges of 25% and 50% on the example quotes
Example quoteKnown work+25% rush+50% rush
Quote A (AT Romance low end)$425$106.25$212.50
Quote B (Alterations by Maheen)$630$157.50$315

The calculation method

Same dress, then every charge.

Package + hem + bustle + take in or let out + straps or cups + sleeves or neckline + pressing + rush + extra fittings × price each + required fees and tax + other extras = full cost

  1. A package is one price for several jobs. Tick each job it covers. Enter $0 if the shop prices each job on its own.
  2. Extra fittings are the fittings you expect minus the ones the quote covers, times the shop's price for each extra one.
  3. Open lines stay open. A blank price for a job you want is never counted as $0, and neither quote is called cheaper until both are complete.

The example uses the low end of each AT Romance range (lace hem $250, bustle $75, bodice $100), so $425, with its two fitting consultations counted as two fittings, and Alterations by Maheen's list (layered or lace hem $450, single-point bustle $80, side seams $100), so $630. Neither prices a third fitting or lists tax, so both stay open.

What an alterations quote should list

  • Each job on its own line, not just "alterations."
  • The hem type: how many layers, and any lace or beading at the edge.
  • The bustle type and how many points it uses.
  • How many fittings the price covers, and the price of another one.
  • Pressing, rush fees, and sales tax.
  • The date the dress will be ready.
  • The deposit, when the balance is due, and what is refundable.

What this leaves out

  • The dress itself, shoes, and undergarments.
  • Changes a shop can only price after it sees the dress on you.
