Extra time is billed by the full hour, so a partial hour rounds up. Ask each DJ how they round. Per hour is for comparing quotes, not the DJ's wage.

Quick answer

Average wedding DJ cost: $1,800

The Knot Real Weddings Study 2026 reports $1,800 average DJ spending for U.S. weddings held in 2025. The study surveyed 10,474 couples. Its DJ figure does not define a standard package or a local price, so compare your own quotes on the same hours and equipment.

The calculation method

Same hours, then every charge.

Package + extra hours × extra-hour rate + ceremony sound + travel + extras you chose = full cost

  1. Extra hours are the hours of music you need past the package, rounded up to a full hour.
  2. Ceremony sound counts only if you need it and the package leaves it out.
  3. Open lines stay open. A blank rate, ceremony price, or travel fee is never counted as $0, and neither quote is called cheaper until both are complete.

The starting numbers are the made-up example from our DJ cost guide: $1,200 for four hours plus two extra hours, ceremony sound, and travel, against $1,850 for six hours with everything included.

Ask every DJ

  • Which start and end times the price covers.
  • Whether ceremony microphones and cocktail music are included.
  • How overtime is billed and who approves it on the day.
  • Whether travel to your venue is included.

What this leaves out

  • Sales tax and any service fees.
  • Venue rules on load-in, sound limits, and end times.

Questions about wedding DJ cost

How much does a wedding DJ cost?

The Knot Real Weddings Study 2026 reports $1,800 average DJ spending for U.S. weddings held in 2025. Use it as a starting point. Your quotes depend on the hours, rooms, equipment, travel, and extras you need.

Is the cost per hour the DJ's hourly wage?

No. Dividing a quote by the hours of music gives you a number for comparing quotes. The price may also cover equipment, planning, setup, and other work.

Can I count an unlisted travel fee as zero?

Not until the DJ confirms it. The calculator keeps a blank travel line open and does not call either quote cheaper until every open line has an answer.

Does a DJ package include ceremony sound?

It depends on the package. Some providers sell reception-only packages and price ceremony sound separately. Check the package description and your written proposal.

How is extra time billed?

The calculator bills extra time by the full hour, so a partial hour rounds up. DJs set their own rules. Ask whether they bill by the hour or half hour and who can approve extra time on the day.

Should I choose the cheapest DJ quote?

Only after both quotes cover the same hours, rooms, and equipment, and every required charge is confirmed. Then weigh the performer, backup plan, and contract terms.
