Start with the scope behind a wedding band price

La Vie En Rose Band shows why two five-piece prices can buy different work. Its $6,800 five-hour package adds a string quartet for ceremony and cocktail time to a five-piece reception band. Travel is extra. Its $6,900 six-hour option combines solo ceremony keys, a cocktail trio, less than two hours of five-piece band music, and less than three hours of a DJ set.

Compare the additions with the Wedding Special

Example numbers: use the same wedding date, venue less than 100 miles from Randolph, Massachusetts, and four-hour reception window for each option. The couple needs ceremony audio with live guitar and two live cocktail musicians. Date availability and the exact ceremony and cocktail times still need the band's confirmation.

Hit Play prices checked October 3, 2026. $7,200 is a listed package; $6,950 and $7,550 are calculated line subtotals. Event quote still needed.
OptionReception bandCeremony and cocktail musicListed amount or calculated subtotal
Five-piece plus additionsFive musicians, no reception saxophone listed$350 ceremony + $400 two cocktail musiciansCalculated: $6,200 + $350 + $400 = $6,950
Wedding SpecialSix musicians, including reception saxophoneCeremony audio; live guitar, DJ or both; keyboards and saxophone for cocktailsListed package: $7,200
Six-piece plus additionsSix musicians, including reception saxophone$350 ceremony + $400 two cocktail musiciansCalculated: $6,800 + $350 + $400 = $7,550

For that plan with reception saxophone, choose the $7,200 Wedding Special as the starting quote request. Calculated saving against the six-piece separate lines: $7,550 minus $7,200 is $350. The named services are closer to the same scope. Ask the band to confirm the same date, rooms, hours and musicians before treating the saving as an event price.

If five reception musicians meet your plan, the $6,950 calculation uses $250 less than the Special. Calculated difference: $7,200 minus $6,950 is $250. That extra amount adds a sixth reception musician and named keyboards and saxophone for cocktails. Choose the Special only if those parts serve your schedule. Ask which two cocktail musicians the separate $400 addition provides.

All listed reception packages include sound and stage lighting, emcee service, music during breaks and a live acoustic dinner set. The page also lists a complimentary half-hour of recorded DJ overtime if the venue allows it. These shared inclusions do not make the Special's four-hour reception coverage longer. The phrase whole day does not state continuous live performance.

Keep travel, tax and venue production beside these prices. Travel is complimentary for venues less than 100 miles from Randolph. At 100 miles or more, the page lists $75 per band member, then $50 per member for each additional 50 miles, rounded down. At 150 miles or more, the purchaser provides lodging. Ask how many people each travel and lodging charge covers.

Example numbers: if the venue falls in the first $75-per-member travel band, and the supplier charges five versus six members, the travel lines calculate to $375 and $450. Under those assumptions, the five-piece option becomes $7,325 and the Special becomes $7,650, before tax and other open charges. Calculated difference: $325. Confirm the mileage method and charged personnel with the band.

Tax and any extra production for your rooms are not listed yet. Keep them outside every subtotal until the supplier gives you amounts. Ask: "For our date and rooms, can you quote the Wedding Special and the five-piece option with the same ceremony, cocktail and reception schedule, including travel, lodging, tax and all required equipment?" Get the two itemized answers in writing.

Check the venue and production plan together

A band needs a workable performance space and a sound plan. Hit Play says its listed packages include a sound system and stage lighting. WeddingWire says equipment can change costs, and extra lighting may add a charge. Ask the venue what it already provides, which power connection the band needs, and when the musicians may load in. Let the band confirm whether its listed equipment covers that room.

If the ceremony and reception use separate spaces, ask whether one sound system can serve both. The published Hit Play ceremony add-on includes audio with live guitar, but it does not describe your venue layout. A written production plan should say which microphones, speakers and technicians go in each location. Keep any venue rental or outside production charge on its own budget line until it is priced.

Ask who handles announcements and music requests. Hit Play includes emcee service and recorded music for formal dances or requests in its packages. That may replace a separate task you planned for someone else. Another band may describe these services differently. Check who cues entrances, first dance and last song on the event schedule; do not assume every band package includes the same duties.

Travel deserves a clear number. La Vie En Rose marks its full-wedding packages as plus travel, without an amount on the page. Hit Play sets mileage and lodging conditions from Randolph. Ask each supplier to price your exact address and date, including parking, tolls and lodging if they apply. If the reply says travel will be decided later, label that line still open in your comparison.

Guest count belongs on the event plan, but do not multiply the band fee by each guest. Zola treats the band as a cost that can stay the same across guest counts. Ask the band to confirm sound coverage for your actual room and crowd.

Questions to ask a wedding band about cost

Use these questions on one call with each band. Send the same event plan ahead of time, then fill in the answers as written amounts and times. The goal is a quote you can add up, with no required work left unnamed.

  • How many musicians and singers will perform, and which instruments will each set use?

  • What are the arrival, setup, live set, break and end times?

  • Which sound, microphones, lighting and emcee duties are included for our rooms?

  • What is the full price for our address, including travel, lodging and required equipment?

  • How do overtime, song requests, a changed lineup and cancellation terms work?

Ask the band: "Which musicians and live sets are confirmed for each part of our schedule, and when will you confirm each open charge?" Put the final lineup and schedule in the same document as the price. Keep the written reply with the contract.

If you are also considering a DJ, compare the job each option performs. A DJ can cover longer stretches of recorded music; a live band's package may include its own recorded music between sets. The VowMath wedding DJ cost guide helps you list DJ package terms. Use your music schedule to decide which option meets the event plan, then compare complete local quotes.

Your next step

Write one music schedule with your date, address, rooms and the moments that need live music. Ask Hit Play to price the five-piece option and Wedding Special against that same schedule, or give two local bands the same assignment. Compare the complete totals only after each band lists the lineup, times, travel, tax and equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Does a wedding band cost more than a DJ?

WeddingWire's reported national averages put a band above a DJ, but the page does not date the sample or match package scope. Compare local quotes for the same event schedule. A band's live sets and any recorded music between them should be listed separately.

Does the band play through the whole reception?

Ask for the live set and break schedule. Hit Play lists recorded music during breaks in its reception packages. Another band may use a different plan. Put the schedule in the written agreement.

Is travel included in a wedding band package?

Travel terms depend on the supplier and venue address. Hit Play lists complimentary travel under 100 miles from Randolph, Massachusetts, then member-based charges. La Vie En Rose marks its packages plus travel. Ask for the amount for your venue before adding up the quote.

Is Hit Play's Wedding Special better value?

The listed $7,200 Special costs $350 less than its $6,800 six-piece reception package plus $350 ceremony audio and $400 for two cocktail musicians. It suits a plan that needs those services and reception saxophone. The five-piece calculation costs $250 less if that lineup is enough. Confirm availability and all event charges.
